Recently I’ve been studying and meditating on Psalm 139:13-18. I’ve always thought this chapter referred to the marvelous way God created our bodies. While it does include our physical beings, after doing some word study I’ve come to realize it mostly refers to those “inward parts” that make up our unique personalities — the combination of thinking, feeling, and behaving that characterize each individual.
We tend to not value our uniqueness and to compare ourselves critically with others. But when we do, we’re actually criticizing God, because it is He who has created us to be exactly who we are. When we are our authentic selves, we are functioning as He created us to. Just think of any other invention — it brings satisfaction and honor to its designer when it functions the way it was created to.
Your unique personality is “wondrous” to Him, and it should be to you, too! He chose you to be who you are to bring honor and glory to Him in a way that only YOU can when you are being your authentic self.
Read the verses below and let them speak God’s affirmation to you:
“For it was you who created my inward parts;
Psalms 139:13-18 (CSB)
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I will praise you
because I have been remarkably and wondrously made.
Your works are wondrous,
and I know this very well.
My bones were not hidden from you
when I was made in secret,
when I was formed in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw me when I was formless;
all my days were written in your book and planned
before a single one of them began.
God, how precious your thoughts are to me;
how vast their sum is!
If I counted them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand;
when I wake up, I am still with you.”
Know that you are deeply loved and valued by the God who created you and that your serving Him as your authentic self in alignment with His Holy Spirit brings Him much glory and honor!
