What it means to be respectful

What it Means to be Respectful

Someone on Facebook recently asked what it means to be respectful. I immediately thought of the greatest compliment I ever received.

It was on a hot summer evening over 20 years ago when I was waitressing. A group of around ten men came into the restaurant after attending a farm equipment show all afternoon in the hot sun. I brought them ice water which they quickly drank. As I came back several times to fill their glasses while they waited for their food, it didn’t take me long to recognize that one was mildly mentally handicapped.

Is there something hijacking your purpose?

Is There a “But” Hijacking Your Purpose?

“If your life were a sentence, how would it read? That is, if you simmered down your entire life into one short statement, just two clauses with a conjunction in the middle, what would it be?”

When I read this question in Kari Patterson’s book Sacred Mundane: How to Find Freedom, Purpose, and Joy, I immediately thought of my life purpose statement. Surely that defines me, I thought, and in many ways, it does.

Understanding the reckless love of God

Understanding the Reckless Love of God

I recently listened to a young woman tell her story of growing up with an abusive dad and subsequently concluding she was worthless.

One day as she was contemplating suicide, she was scrolling through Facebook when she came across the song “Reckless Love” by Cory Asbury.
